In hindsight, I should have copied the files off the drive. We did drop the hard drive once but it was working fine after that and I did not make much of it. I have tried it at home as well with 1 desktop and two laptops without much success.

But DETAIL DISK didn't work, as though it couldn't access anything on the disk. In Diskpart, LIST DISK didn't show the disk (though its number was skipped), but it could be selected nonetheless I have a similar problem (Disk Management returning an "Incorrect function" error when trying to initialize a disk), so I tried your solution.
