According to their 2016 Black Friday ad scans which have since been released, they will be opening their doors at 7AM on November 24th, 2016ーpossibly making them one of only a few stores who are opening up bright and early on Thanksgiving Day. Similar to previous years, Rural King will once again be holding a large Black Friday event this November. As of 2015, they exceeded $1 billion in total sales for the first time. Since then, Rural King has expanded to include close to 90 different locations across the United States in addition, they also run an active online store. Known for their notable sales tactic of offering free popcorn and coffee to their shoppers, they sell a variety of items including work gear, pet supplies, hunting equipment, firearms, power tools, and more. After many decades of successfully selling farm supply, they opened up a 210,000 square feet corporate office and warehouse in 1999 the old locations were then donated to charity.

By 1970, a second addition had been added to the original store. Starting out with only two employees, the company slowly encompassed more area as the business grew steadily. Originally founded by Keith Beaird and Kermit Speer, Rural King opened its first store in the summer of 1960 in Mattoon, Illinois.
